Lighthouse Steps

308 steps down to the lighthouse and not a single step less back up again. The lighthouse keepers were required to climb down to trim the four wicks on the oil-lamp every two hours, twenty minutes. Thanks to the remarkable design of the Fresnel lens, the light from these four smoky wicks was made visible at the maximum possible distance, the horizon, twenty four miles away.
